Language

Children hear rich language, build vocabulary, share ideas, and grow confidence speaking and communicating.

📚

Literacy

Stories, poetry, rhymes, and books help children explore sounds, words, pictures, and early reading foundations.

Imagination

Movement, rhythm, feelings, and pretend play invite children to participate with curiosity and delight.

Why WordPlay matters

The earliest years are a powerful time for language, connection, and curiosity. When books are linked to warmth, attention, laughter, and shared discovery, children begin to see reading as something they want to return to.

Shared reading supports early language, literacy, cognitive, and social-emotional development. WordPlay brings those meaningful book experiences into your child’s preschool day.

  • Rich vocabulary and conversation
  • Listening, focus, and sound awareness
  • Emotional understanding and empathy
  • Confidence, curiosity, and imagination

Program details

WordPlay is offered through participating preschools in the St. Johns neighborhood of Jacksonville.

Where

At your child's own preschool — WordPlay comes to the classroom, so there is nothing extra for you to drive to.

When

Your child joins one session a week, during the school day. There are four session times each week; the day and time are set with your child's center.

Lesson length

30 minutes — long enough to fall into a story, short enough to hold every young child's attention.

Who

Children ages 2–5, in groups of no more than 12, so every child gets heard.

Limited space

12 children per session, four sessions a week — 48 places in total. Your child attends 1 session per week. Parents are welcome — as participants! Once a group of 12 is full, the small group is the whole point, so we do not add extra chairs; the next opening is the following term.
